Batumi I International Symposium in Lexicography

 

We have the honour of inviting you to take part in the I International Symposium in Lexicography that will be held in Batumi, Georgia from 14 May until 16 May 2010. 

The Symposium will be hosted by Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University.

Organizers of the Symposium:

  • Faculty of the Humanities, Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University;

  • Arn. Chikobava Institute of Linguistics;

  • Lexicographic Centre, Tbilisi I. Javakhishvili State University.

 

Aim of the Symposium:

  • to bring together professional lexicographers, researchers, publishers, software developers and those interested in Lexicography and Lexicology in order to enable direct dialogue between them;

  • to evaluate lexicographical activity in developed countries, its history and present state; to analyse problems existing in this field and discuss ways and prospects of development of lexicography in Georgia;

  • to arrange presentations of completed or ongoing lexicographical projects, exhibition

      of published dictionaries, demonstrations of electronic dictionaries; to discuss new  

      ideas;

  • to show the importance of lexicography for the education of schoolchildren and students, as well as for the development of Georgian culture;

  • to determine the strategy and work out recommendations for public or government agencies.

 

Experienced Georgian and foreign lexicographers, guest speakers of the symposium will deliver plenary lectures on important lexicographical issues. Along with papers lexicographical projects, electronic and online dictionaries will be presented.

 

Call for papers

Papers and software demonstrations are invited on all topics of lexicography, particularly in the following fields, which are the main focus of the symposium:

  • Lexicography, Lexicology – present state and prospects of development;

  • Bilingual Lexicography;

  • The Dictionary-Making Process, Lexicographical Principles;

  • Specialized Lexicography;

  • Electronic Lexicography;

  • Lexicological Issues of Lexicographical Relevance.

 

The main topics do not exclude other lexicographical issues. Papers and demonstrations that are relevant to the symposium, but do not fit into any of the topics above, will be nevertheless considered for presentation at the symposium.

 

 

Within the framework of the symposium, several Round Table discussions will be held on the following topics:

  • Dictionary as a scholarly work, lexicographical principles and ideas;

  • Lexicography and copyright;

  • Lexicography and the State;

  • What kind of information does a dictionary contain about a language;

  • Modern methods and technologies of Lexicography.

 

Working Languages of the Symposium: Georgian, English, Russian.

 

Time Limit:

plenary lecture –  40 min

presentation   – 25 min

paper – 15 min

discussion – 10 min

  • full name of an author / a participant of the symposium;

  • academic position / degree / organization;

  • title of the paper / presentation;

  • contact information (address, e-mail, telephone numbers).

After sending the required information to the above-mentioned e-mail address, you will receive a confirmation letter about your registration.

 

Submission of Synopsis

Authors are asked to send the synopsis of their symposium paper no later than 1 March 2010 to the e-mail symposium@margaliti.com

 

Format guidelines:

font: Sylfaen, Times New Roman, 12 pt

spacing: 1.5

Synopsis should not exceed one page in each language

Synopsis of the paper should be presented in Georgian and English (for Georgian participants).

 

Once we have received the file and have checked it, you will receive a message confirming that your synopsis will be forwarded to the Editorial Board to be reviewed for presentation at the Symposium 2010.

 

You will be informed before 1 April 2010 that your paper is included in the programme of the Symposium.
